Bétonsalon est une association de loi 1901 qui gère un centre d’art et de recherche situé dans une université, au cœur d’un quartier en reconstruction, appelé ZAC Paris Rive Gauche, à la périphérie nord-est du 13ème arrondissement de Paris, à deux pas de la Seine et de Ivry sur Seine.

Bétonsalon est conçu comme un lieu de travail, de production, d’activités et de vie pour les étudiants et le personnel de l’université, les habitants, les commerçants et les employés du quartier, les acteurs de disciplines variées : artistes, philosophes, dramaturges, chorégraphes, scientifiques… et tous ceux qui souhaitent contribuer à faire de cet espace un lieu d’échanges.

Bétonsalon propose une programmation expérimentale qui entend remettre en question le rôle qu’un artiste, un commissaire, un lieu culturel peuvent jouer dans la société en testant la présence de l’art dans un contexte urbain, social et politique… et en oeuvrant à la réalisation d’une conception pragmatiste de la culture, comme créations d’opportunités d’individuation pour tous.

Les projets prennent de multiples formes et se développement sur des temporalités différentes : ateliers, conférences, publications, expositions, visites de quartier, festivals, performances, interventions dans l’espace public…

Depuis son installation sur le site de l’université Paris Diderot – Paris 7 dans la ZAC Paris Rive Gauche, Bétonsalon axe son développement des publics autour du cadre universitaire, comprenant étudiants, chercheurs et personnels de l’université, mais également dans son ancrage territorial en travaillant avec les établissements scolaires, les habitants, associations, employés et comités d’entreprises du quartier et des villes voisines.

Nous testons différentes modalités de mise en relation avec l’université. Avec les « midi-deux », les étudiants sont invités à s’exprimer en proposant un concert, un débat, une projection, une improvisation de théâtre… Des fêtes étudiantes sont également organisées en début et fin d’année scolaire. Bétonsalon soutient et accompagne les initiatives des étudiants en mettant son espace, son équipe et son matériel à disposition pour des projets tels que revues étudiantes, films, concerts, colloques… Nous proposons à des artistes et des étudiants de travailler sur un projet ensemble. Ainsi, l’étudiante Agathe Peyrat a réalisé une performance avec l’artiste Thu Van Tran ; l’artiste Isabelle Cornaro a participé à un colloque organisé par l’association ‘Limit(e) Beckett’ ; l’artiste Jochen Dehn et les étudiants Khanh-Dang N’Guyen Thu Lam et Jonathan Fouchard ont collaboré sur un projet de recherche pendant six mois ; les étudiants Julien Lanchet, Sara Martinetti, Valentine Bonomo et moi-même travaillons depuis six mois sur la conception du projet d’exposition ‘Parties Prenantes’ qui se déroulera de novembre 2009 à janvier 2010. Nous travaillons également avec les enseignants dans le cadre du cursus universitaire et accueillons des cours et des examens. Nous prenons des étudiants en stage ou en UE libre et leur proposons des formations (vidéo, web design…) en fonction de leurs envies.

Au niveau local, Bétonsalon constitue un petit centre de ressources sur le quartier : nous avons réalisé un site internet qui présente une carte, des notices sur les architectures et des interviews avec les architectes de la ZAC. Nous proposons régulièrement des apéros et des visites de quartier, en collaboration avec d’autres associations telle que ‘A travers’, avec l’aménageur Semapa ou avec des architectes. Nous mettons en œuvre des ateliers et projets pédagogiques avec les scolaires (école Primo Levi, collège Thomas Mann, collège Camille Claudel…).

PRESENTATION OF BETONSALON

Bétonsalon is a non-profit organization that runs a centre for art and research located within a university, in the heart of a neighborhood currently undergoing reconstruction. This neighbourhood, ZAC Paris Rive Gauche, is located on the north-eastern outskirts of the 13th arrondissement of Paris, very close to the Seine and Ivry sur Seine.
Bétonsalon is designed as a place for work, production, activities and leisure, for the students, teachers and university staff, inhabitants, shopkeepers and employees of the neighbourhood, and people working in various disciplines: artists, philosophers, playwrights, choreographers, scientists … and all of those who wish to contribute to make it a space of exchange.
Bétonsalon presents an experimental programme that calls into question the role that an artist, a curator, a cultural centre can play in society, by investigating the presence of art in an urban, social and political context … and by working towards a pragmatist conception of culture, as a creator of individuation opportunities for all.
The projects take multiple forms and develop on different time scales: workshops, lectures, publications, exhibitions, neighbourhood visits, festivals, performances, interventions in the public space

Since its installation on the site of Paris Diderot-Paris 7 University in the ZAC Paris Rive Gauche, Betonsalon has positioned its public development around this university context, but also around its
territorial anchorage, by working with educational establishments, inhabitants, associations, and the employees and committees of companies in the neighbourhood and neighbouring towns. We have tested different modalities of establishing a relationship with the university. In the «midday-two» breaks, the students are invited to express themselves by proposing a concert, a debate, a projection, a theatrical improvisation… Student parties are also organised at the beginning and end of the academic year.

Betonsalon supports and complements student initiatives by making its space, its team and its equipment available for projects such as student reviews, films, concerts, colloquiums… We invite artists and students to work on projects together. In this way, the student Agathe Pevrat realised a performance with the artist Thu Van Tran; the artist Isabelle Cornaro participated in a colloquium organised by the association ‘Limit(e) Beckett’; the artists Jochen Dehn and the students Khanh-Dang N’Guyen Thu Lam and Jonathan Fouchard collaborated on a research project over six months; the students Julien Lanchet, Sara Martinetti, Valentine Bonomo and I have been working for the past six months on the conception of the exhibition project ‘Parties Prenantes’, which will take place from November 2009 to January 2010.
We are also working with the teachers in the framework of the university curriculum and host lessons and exams. We take on students for work experience or for gaining points at the Universisty and offer them apprenticeships (video, web design…) depending on their interests. On a local level, Betonsalon constitutes a small resource centre about the neighbourhood: we have produced an internet site which features a map, texts on architectural features and interviews with ZAC architects. We regularly host apero evenings and neighbourhood tours, in collaboration with other associations such as ‘A travers’, with the urban planner Semapa or with architects. We produce workshops and educational projects with educational establishments (Primo Levi School, Thomas Mann College, Camille Claudel College…).
